Inspired by the noble deeds accomplished by the noble souls and aspiring to make a contribution towards the betterment of society. Another pearl in our string of social work was added on when we visited ‘Destination’ a ‘Home for Mentally Challenged’ in Kahilipara, Guwahati. This organization run by Mrs. Rupa Hazarika, is home to 80 mentally challenged inmates many of whom are abandoned, orphaned, street children. The center also houses mentally challenged individuals above 60 years of age. As soon as we received the information that the organization was undergoing a survival crisis and would be glad to accept all the help that comes its way, so without further delay and under the able guidance of our President, Mrs. Suman Pippersenia, a team of PRERANA members including Mrs. Shakuntala Mewara, Mrs. Anamika Tiwari, Mrs. Pallavi Sahu and Mrs. Smita Dwivedi made a visit to Destination. We took along with us some groceries and food items. Some hot and fresh snacks and juice tetra packs were also carried along to brighten their spirits and they served their purpose well by acting as an ice breaker. It was really gratifying to see their smiling faces and in no time we had a wish list in our hands for the next visit. Soon we were interacting with them, trying to listen and to understand their problems.
After a heartening tete-a-tite with them it was time to say good bye. We returned home somewhat heavyhearted and with mixed up emotions. It seemed as if life has suddenly taught us many a lessons together, and most important amongst them was compassion and commiseration. Their smiling faces have taught us to be happy even in the most adverse of situations and be grateful for what we have. It was truly a unique experience.
We pledged our support and cooperation to this organization which is doing a commendable job of conscientiously taking care of its inmates.
